Dietitians provide medical nutrition therapy to people staying in hospital. This may include providing feeding support through tubes or directly into the blood stream. Patients they help may include those with significant weight loss or low weight, difficulty eating, or ongoing nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. If you or your loved one is concerned about nutrition, ask your doctor or nurse for a referral to see a dietitian.
Dietitians also support your nutritional needs at home. They can help people with nutritional challenges, health conditions, or those nearing end of life, to remain healthy in their home as long as possible. These services may be provided to individuals or groups at an Interior Health location, doctor’s office or directly in your home.
Long-term care dietitians provide nutrition advice to people living in a long-term care home. Every person living in an Interior Health long-term care home receives a personalized nutrition care plan. These care plans are regularly reviewed to make sure they provide the right nutrition advice.
Public health dietitians work with community groups, early childhood programs, school districts, organizations, health professionals, educators and local government to support and promote healthy eating in the community. They support the development of policies, programs, resources and training that make it easier for people to enjoy eating well and achieve optimal health throughout the lifespan.
Healthy eating is the cornerstone of good physical and mental health, a healthy diet can help prevent and manage diseases, but healthy eating is about more than just food choices. It also includes enjoying eating, culture and food traditions, access to affordable food, and the skills to prepare food.
